About Calculating series

These 48 x 12-inch acrylic paintings on wood panels are an extension of previous drawings and installations that reference the shape and familiar composition of sales receipts and calculator tape. Once again, I start with the iridescent pearl ground upon which I stamp numbers and mathematical symbols to create compositions that explore themes of calculating monetary transactions, accounting, and accumulation. Calculating Shoestring Budget squeezes the numbers in a single vertical string that narrowly avoids a red credit card, implying strategic frugality. Calculating Zero Sum consists of equal parts red and black numbers that fade into a center void, implying that loss offsets profit in a zero-sum game. Calculating Deductions is a satisfying sequence of additions that implies tax-season spoilers. I want to continue to add to this series with new compositions over time.
